YMCA Plymouth
Access to food
We want to develop our garden to grow more produce using greenhouses, planters and trees. Additionally, we're building an outdoor classroom to deliver more workshops and projects in this space.
About this cause
We aim to support our community by developing a garden/allotment area, to improve social connections and grow fresh produce to tackle food poverty. Our community allotment is used by 200 young people aged 16-19 yrs; 15 gardening volunteers; 90 Local Nursery children aged 1-5 yrs; and 100 YMCA community members. The garden is used for employability, outdoor education, and cultivation for the local food bank.
How this cause brings people in the community together
Our project is tackling isolation and food poverty while bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds. Those involved will gain outdoor skills and socialise with others in a safe space while giving back to the community. All produce grown in the garden is then donated to local food bank (Provide Devon) to support local families in crisis; empowering all those involved to give back.
